What is home schooling? What are the pros and cons of home schooling?

Homeschooling infographicHome schooling is when the parents decide to educate their children at home. The kids learn about things that they would have learned about in school at home. Parents may decide to teach the kids by themselves or hire tutors who can come to teach the kids at home. In most cases, parents who opt for home schooling want to ensure that their kids get one on one attention from the person teaching them. They believe that this helps to ensure that they receive the best education possible. Home schooling has its own advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages of home schooling

  1. Provides educational freedom

You can easily control what you want your children to learn about when they are home schooled. This will not be possible when they are going to learn in a school setting. This is because it is virtually impossible to dictate what your kids are going to be taught when they go to school. However, when they are learning at home, you have the power to decide what they are going to learn about and what they are not going to be taught.

  1. Allows better control of time

There will be no time spent traveling from home to school. Home schooling gives parents the opportunity to have full control of their kids’ schedules. As a parent, you will be able to decide when your kids will be learning, when they will be playing and when they will be resting. Taking control of all these things can be impossible when the kids have to go to a school.

  1. Provides religious freedom

Parents who strongly believe that their religious beliefs play an important part in bringing up their children may want to home school them so that they can incorporate their beliefs into their minds without interference from other people or things. Home schooling enables parents to teach their children about their religion with ease.

  1. Provides an opportunity to create closer family relationships

When the kids are at home most of the time, you will have closer family relationships with them. Your bond will be much stronger than if they had to go to school to learn every day.

The disadvantages of home schooling

  1. It is expensive

It is expensive to hire a tutor to teach your children different subjects at home. This is because each tutor may charge a special rate to come at your home to teach your kids. It will be much cheaper to take you kids to school than hiring qualified tutors to teach them at home.

  1. The kids may be taught by non-teachers

If you are not a trained teacher you are not qualified to teach your children. There is high chance that your kids will be taught by non-teachers when you opt for home schooling. Being taught by non-teachers imply means that they are not going to get quality education.

  1. It requires time commitment

To be able to educate your kids effectively at home, you should be prepared to forego many other activities. Home schooling can only be done effectively by a dedicated parent.
